Benjamin West (1738-1820) - American Painter
Benjamin West is known for his paintings of historical scenes set in and around the time of the American Revolution. His most famous painting "The Death of General Wolfe" is more than 5 feet tall and more than 7 feet long! West was also commissioned by King George III to paint royal portraits.

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) - American Author
American author, poet, and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson first formulated the philosophy of Transcendentalism. His essay "Nature" expresses this philosophy. He also wrote "The Concord Hymn" and coined the phrase "the shot heard round the world."

Georgia O'Keefe is well-known for her abstract and close-up paintings of flowers.

Robert Hobart (1760-1816) - Politician
Robert Hobart, 4th Earl of Buckinghamshire, was elected Member of Parliament in 1788 and served as Colonial Secretary from 1801-1804. Hobart, Tasmania is named for him.

Eli Whitney (1765-1825) - American Inventor
Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. He patented it on March 14, 1794. This machine separated the cotton from the seeds and hull and greatly enhanced cotton production.

Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894) - American Author
Physician, Oliver Wendell Holmes, wrote the famous poem "Old Ironsides" about a U.S. naval ship. The ship later was made a monument; he also coined the word "anesthesia."

James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937) - Scottish Novelist
James Matthew Barrie wrote the stories of Peter Pan and The Lost Boys. His college acquaintances include Arthur Conan Doyle and Robert Lewis Stevenson, with whom he wrote for the university newspaper.

Robert Laird Borden (1854-1937) - Former Prime Minister
Robert Laird Borden was the 8th Prime Minister of Canada. He was the first Canadian Prime Minister to attend a British cabinet meeting.

Stephen Crane (1871-1900) - American Author
Stephen Crane began writing at the age of 8. His most famous novel, The Red Badge of Courage, was about the American Civil War. He died at the age of 28 of tuberculosis.

Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt was the second wife of President Theodore Roosevelt. As First Lady, she had strong character, sound judgment and good household management skills.

Ruth Benedict (1887-1948) - American Anthropologist
American anthropologist Ruth Benedict wrote, Patterns of Culture which was translated into 14 languages. She studied cultural relativism and spoke out against fascism.

Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) - 14th President of the United States of America
A strong background in law, military service and politics brought Franklin Pierce to the presidency of the United States in 1853. During his term the Kansas-Nebraska Act was enacted and the Gadsden Purchase, 45,535 miles of land, bought what now makes up the southernmost area of New Mexico and Arizona.

Alfred Deakin (1856-1919) - Politician
Alfred Deaking was the 2nd Prime Minister of Australia. He became prime minister in 1903, and served as prime minister for a total of five years in four different ministries.

Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919) - American Activist and Surgeon

Florence Nightingale, sometimes called "The Lady with the Lamp", was born in Italy in a wealthy British family. She instigated new ways of caring for soldiers during her work in the Crimean war and throughout her career.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) - British Engineer
Isambard Kingdom Brunel was the British engineer known for the creation of the Great Western Railway, a series of ships and bridges. He also helped build the first propeller driven ship.

Boston native Edgar Allan Poe was a progenitor of detective fiction. His life was full of tragedies, including the death of his mother and young wife to tuberculosis. His tragic life inspired many of his works such as "The Raven".

Walt Whitman (1819-1892) - American Poet
Perhaps the greatest of all American poets, Walt Whitman broke with the European style and structure of poetry and developed an innovative and "American" style of poetry. He revised and added to his most famous book Leaves of Grass until his death in 1892.

Dwight D. Eisenhower  (1890-1969) - 34th President of the United States
